Lidl Ireland, Distribution Centre

Project Overview

Objective:

To reduce the facility’s carbon output by 473 tonnes annually.

Client:

Enerpower & Lidl

Service Provided:

End-to-end solar PV project delivery including design, supply, installation, and commissioning of rooftop PV array and associated electrical systems.

Partnerships:

Kellihers Electrical Waterford

The Challenge

Lidl’s new distribution centre required a large-scale, robust solar solutions that could be integrated with the site’s operations and rooftop geometry.

The project needed a reliable system design to accommodate over 4,200 panels, a secure flat-roof mounting solution, high-efficiency inverters, and a bespoke rooftop inverter framework.

The work had to be completed to tight deadlines while delivering measurable carbon and cost savings to support Lidl’s renewable energy targets.

The Solution

Kellihers Electrical Waterford and Enerpower led the project from concept through to handover, delivering a turnkey Solar PV solution tailored to the Newbridge facility.

Key elements included:

  • Detailed system design and engineering to optimise energy yield for the site and roof orientation.
  • Installation of Van der Valk’s ValkPro+ East/West flat roof framing to efficiently support the large rooftop array and maximise generation across daylight hours.
  • Supply and commissioning of SMA high-efficiency inverters and an SMA Inverter Manager for reliable conversion and system control.
  • Fabrication and installation of a bespoke rooftop inverter mounting framework to meet site-specific needs.
  • Full electrical installation including all cables, switchgears, and containment, plus testing and commissioning to applicable standards.

The Results

Successful delivery and commissioning of Ireland’s largest rooftop PV installation at the time in 2022.

The PV installation now generates over one quarter of the distribution centre’s energy requirements.

Estimated annual carbon emissions reduction of approximately 473 tonnes CO2, equivalent to the annual energy use of around 240 homes.

Demonstrated commercial viability of large-scale rooftop solar for retail distribution facilities, helping Lidl reduce energy costs and future carbon-related taxes while reinforcing sustainability commitments.
